I recently got word that a group of citizens in Marshall, Missouri, are protesting the inclusion of two graphic novels in their library: Fun Home by Alison Bechdel and Blankets by Craig Thompson.
I immediately put a hold on Fun Home, since I’m not familiar with it, but I read Blankets just a few months ago and it is quite possibly the best book I’ve read this year.
Part a coming-of-age story, part autobiography, he recounts his first real relationship in his teen years as a art enthusiast brought up in a strict Christian household in a rural community. It’s an amazingly honest novel, as all the pain and joy of falling in love is here. Especially pain. He talks about trying to reconcile his urges – sex and masturbation, especially – with his faith, and the process of going through the ups and downs of a relationship for the first time.
It’s heartbreaking and true and not pornographic at all and it deserves to be read by teens from Marshall, Missouri, if they want to read it.
