So: who was your first?

Via Matthew Yglesias: who played at the first concert you ever attended?

My first concert was a triple bill at Sandstone: Cracker, the Gin Blossoms, and the Spin Doctors. 1993, I think. I went for Cracker and the Blossoms and left shortly afterward. The crew I went with had lawn seats and the smell of ganja that hung over the crowd was, shall we say, potent.

(What, you thought the subject referred to something else?)

  1. I think, if my geezer memory serves me correctly, that my first concert was seeing Olivia Newton-John on her Physical tour with my brother. I can no longer remember if it was at the Kemper or Municipal.

    God I’m getting old.

  2. The very first concert I ever went to was when I was in elementary school. My mom took my brother and me to a Monkees concert–which was actually Davey, Mickey and two guys who weren’t really Monkees (Boyce & Hart, I think). The first concert I ever went to as a big person was when I was 17 and living in England. I saw U2 at Wembley Stadium, touring for The Joshua Tree. The opening acts were Lou Reed (seriously! opening for U2! bwuh?), the Pogues and Lone Justice.

  3. My mother overheard me tell someone my first concert was Willie Nelson’s Whiskey River Tour (1975/76?), and she said that was incorrect. They took me to a Sonny and Cher concert way before that, I just don’t remember! 😉

  4. I know that I was taken in utero to see Heatwave and Miles Davis. My first grown-people concert was Social Distortion, if I’m not mistaken.
